1. Why Simple Year Subtraction Fails
The most common method used by basic software is naive year subtraction:
The Problem: This formula only works if the person's birthday has already passed in the current year. If a person was born on November 10, 2000, on August 31, 2026, their age is 25 years, not 26. Naive subtraction overestimates by an entire year.
2. The 3-Tier Gregorian Anchor Algorithm
To compute years, months, and days with 100% precision, our algorithm uses a 3-tier progressive calendar anchor:
Tier 1: Completed Years Calculation
Determine the latest full birthday anniversary that has completely occurred before the calculation target date.
Tier 2: Whole Calendar Months Progression
Progress forward month-by-month from the latest anniversary, respecting variable month lengths (28, 29, 30, 31 days).
Tier 3: Exact Day Remainder
Calculate the exact remaining days from the monthly milestone to the target date using UTC millisecond day differentials.
3. February 29 Leap Day Legal Standard
Under common law statutory precedent (e.g. English common law tradition followed internationally), a person born on February 29 legally turns a year older on March 1 in non-leap years. In leap years (e.g. 2024, 2028), their anniversary falls on February 29.
